Local Abergavenny couple, Michael Stewart and Tracy Yarnall, have embarked on a new business enterprise by launching Wales’ first Mr. Electric® franchise, the UK’s leading electrical franchise brand, covering Newport, Abergavenny, Cwmbran, Pontypool and surrounds.

The new office, which is based in Abergavenny, is ready to start trading from 14th October. Michael and Tracy will be joined by one other fully qualified electrician, providing electrical solutions for homes and businesses in all aspects of electrical repair, installation and energy saving, including electric vehicle car-charging points.

Prior to becoming new franchise owners, Michael spent eight years running a successful newsagent and post office in Cwmbran, while Tracy devoted her time to supporting struggling families during her four years of working for Barnardo’s. After taking the business as far as it could go, Michael decided he needed to set himself a new challenge by embarking on an exciting new business opportunity in the electrical industry, a venture Tracy was eager to join him in.

Not wanting to start a new business from scratch, Michael and Tracy began researching various franchise opportunities. They decided to make an investment in a future and recession proof sector with a well-known brand and was growing fast. Mr. Electric fitted the bill, particularly as it was part of Neighbourly, the world’s largest franchisor of home service brands, with a franchise network of over 3,700 franchisees worldwide.

A new collaboration to provide a full turnkey funded solution for electric vehicle (EV) charging across the UK has been announced between Mr. Electric®, the UK’s leading electrical franchise brand, and Plug-N-Go, a market leading solution for funded EV Charging Systems. Together, the two organisations offer a fully integrated EV charging solution, which is risk and cost free, across public and private accessed sites, and will include everything from supplying, installing, maintaining and the management of charge points throughout the contract term.

Authorised Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) installers of EV charging points, Mr. Electric and Plug-N-Go will work with a number of leading EV equipment service providers, who Mr. Electric already work with, to install easy to use chargers operated on an ‘open charging’ model, enabling people to use them on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Mr. Electric’s network of franchised NICEIC approved electrical experts will carry out the installation and management of the charging points. Plug-N-Go will do the maintenance and provide a single contract for all its infrastructure through the contract.

Midlands based Buzzards Valley Vineyard & Bistro, a commercial centre with four different businesses, including fishing lakes, a restaurant, shop and artisan market, recently installed the two Plug-N-Go fully funded, EV charge points in its car park for customers to use.

Yvonne Viggers, co-owner of Buzzards Valley, said: “It made total business and environmental sense for us to provide an electric vehicle (EV) solution for our customers, particularly when we knew we were eligible for a Government grant to pay the cost of the installation. It is a win-win for both us and our customers as it doesn’t cost either of us a penny. We very much see this as a long term investment for the growth of our business and believe that every public car park should offer similar EV facilities, particularly if we are to see mass adoption on our roads in the future.”

Dwyer Franchising, LLC (“Dwyer Group”), one of the world’s largest parent companies of home service brands, yesterday announced it has been acquired by Harvest Partners, LP (“Harvest Partners” or “Harvest”), a New York-based private equity firm. The deal marks the fourth and largest private equity transaction of Dwyer Group in the franchise organisation’s history. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Harvest’s purchase transfers majority ownership of Dwyer Group from The Riverside Company, a global investment firm that invested in Dwyer Group two separate times – taking the company private in 2003 and reacquiring the company in 2014.

Mr. Electric, the UK’s leading electrical franchise brand, has teamed up with the University of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton Homes to trial a new smart heating system, Heat Genius, to help homeowners reduce their energy consumption and bills by only heating the rooms that are being used. Mr. Electric Wolverhampton is one of the electrical businesses involved in the six month trial and recently installed the new intelligent heating system into one of City of Wolverhampton Council homes managed by Wolverhampton Homes.

Heat Genius predicts and adapts to a household’s energy usage by using a smart thermostat to heat only the parts of the home that are being used. The Genius Hub automatically adjusts the heating schedules for each room, ensuring it’s warm when you arrive, but not wasting heat when you’re out. It even turns radiators off when a window is open, or when it’s a warm day.

Following a product and installation training programme by Heat Genius, Mr. Electric is now able to install the system into all properties, including buildings with gas central heating and internet connection. The system comprises a Genius Hub controller that plugs into your internet router, a boiler controller and a portable wireless thermostat that can be moved from room to room. By being fully wireless, the user can control and monitor the system remotely via a smart device or web browser to identify where savings can be made, as well as seeing which rooms are warmer or colder than they need to be.

Rajiv Dhanjal, working within the ERDF funded Built Environment Climate Change Innovations (BECCI) team, at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We are delighted to be working with Mr. Electric for the Heat Genius trial and to be able to use their skills and experience for one of the installations in a tenant’s home. With the product being local to the West Midlands, we only wanted to work with local heating installers, who were not only reputable, but also demonstrated innovative expertise in eco heating solutions. Mr. Electric fitted this exactly and their professionalism and knowledge has really impressed me. Once we have evaluated the pilot later this year, I hope that we can continue our relationship with Mr. Electric into the future.”

The Genius Hub is a zoned home heating control system that can be a truly “fit and forget” solution, as it learns when you use each room and automatically cuts energy consumption without impacting on your comfort. The fact that the Hub is wireless means it is really easy to install - you don’t need fancy wiring or the walls knocked about, you just need the Genius Hub and valves on the radiators to get this new level of flexibility which no other system can offer. We hope to continue to build our relationship with the University of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton Homes and we will have the opportunity to roll out Heat Genius to many more homes across the region.”

The Smart Heating Controls pilot study, managed by the BECCI project, aims to investigate how suitable the Heat Genius system is for local consumers and how easily it can be deployed by the local SMEs. Working with Wolverhampton Homes, suitable properties were chosen and innovation active SMEs were selected for this six month trial.
