Today’s end users are expecting ever-greater functionality and flexibility from the wiring accessories used in their electrical installations. Modular accessories provide by far the best way to meet these expectations as Phil Williams of Eaton’s Electrical Sector explains.
The days when all you would expect to find in a wiring accessories catalogue was a few single and double gang switches and some power sockets are long gone. Today’s accessories, particularly those used in commercial and public premises and even in up-market homes, must cater for a wide and expanding range of requirements.
These include, for example, the provision of network and AV connections, the integration of dimmer modules and in an increasing number of cases, support for automation and control functions. Furthermore, it must be possible to provide these features – and many others – in virtually any permutation. A moment’s reflection will show that the only practicable way to meet these demands for versatility and flexibility is to adopt a modular system.
Modular wiring accessories are, in themselves, nothing new. Switchplates with interchangeable modules have been around for decades. But the best of today's modular systems offer much more, having been specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of modern installations. These new generation modular systems – of which Premera Mix from Eaton, is a leading example provide an exceptionally wide choice of modules.
Of course, the standard rocker switches and 13A socket outlets are included, but these are complemented by dimmer modules; a variety of non-standard, European and US power sockets; communications modules such as RJ45 Cat 6 data connections, isolated co-axial/satellite outlets and RJ11 telephone outlets; key switches with and without neon indicators; and a wide range of other options.
A particularly exciting development is the ability to integrate wireless switch modules, up to 4 gang, which as their name suggests, need no wiring. These switches can be installed wherever they are most convenient for the user, without having to worry about where and how the cables will need to be run.
Wireless operation is also a big benefit in, listed buildings and other properties where it is essential to minimise the damage caused by installing electrical services, and also when modifying existing installations where costly redecoration would be needed if conventional buried wiring were used.
In all cases, using wireless switches within a modular system means that a consistent appearance can be maintained between the wired and wireless parts of the installation and also that wired and wireless components can be mixed as required, even on the same mounting plate.
While the range of modules is a key consideration when choosing a modular wiring accessory system, it is not the only consideration. For the contractor, ease of installation is equally important. The best systems will provide popular sizes of mounting plates complete with integral earthing mounting frames and earthing facilities, which not only makes them fast and easy to install, but also easier to order and stock. The modules will be installed from the front and fast removal will be possible with a clip release. Large, top facing terminals are provided to simplify and speed wiring.
The best systems will, of course, also meet regulatory requirements by offering features such as a choice of white or grey covers and the option of broad switch rockers to aid compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act and Part M of the Building Regulations.
To ensure end user appeal, attractive appearance is vital, as are long term safety, high-quality construction and durability. It is always worth spending a little more to ensure that these requirements are met, as neither the end user nor the contractor benefits when bargain basement accessories start giving problems just a short time after they have been installed.
As we’ve seen, the latest modular wiring accessory systems with their extensive range of options, support for wireless operation, aesthetic design, robust construction and ease of installation offer unbeatable flexibility and convenience. There can be no doubt, therefore, that when it comes to wiring accessories, the future’s modular!
