Unqualified people should not play with electricity.
That's the stark warning, backed by NAPIT (the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers), after a series of unrelated fires around the country, which have damaged a number of buildings, including three apartment blocks, a factory and an antiques centre.
NAPIT, which has over 7,000 members nationwide, echoed the views of one fire services official after residents were evacuated from their flat, who said: Unqualified people should not play with the electricity intake. If anyone spots a smouldering fuse box, call the fire brigade or electricity board."
While none of the incidents proved fatal -- unlike a recent case where a woman died after running a bath where the electricity supply was not bonded -- NAPIT stressed that prevention is better than cure as shown by the importance of Periodic Inspection Reporting (PIR) on all properties. This remains imperative to maintain the safety of householders and tenants and continues to be highlighted by NAPIT's Competent Person Scheme.
Homeowners and tenants can get electrical advice from their local NAPIT electrician and receive information on earthing and bonding available in a new leaflet produced by NAPIT titled ‘Why on earth does my bonding needs checking?’ to explain in easily understood terms the importance of this work that may be required on your home.
