The Haynes International Motor Museum is dedicated to restoring, retaining and preserving motoring vehicles of historical and cultural interest. With more than 400 cars and bikes on display in stunning style, dating from 1885 to the present day, it is the largest international motor museum in Britain.
Haynes approached Dextra Lighting armed with a brief to deliver a flexible, discreet, low maintenance and energy efficient lighting solution. This was for its new ‘Black Box’ two storey exhibition space and also for the refurbishment of the existing display room, “The American Collection”. It was essential that whilst the lighting was to be functional it must also be in keeping with the new interior design of each location. One other important consideration was the lighting needed to be flexible in order to accommodate frequently changing layouts and displays.
Taking this into consideration Dextra Lighting specified the Hi Track LED. Powered by Phillips SLM LED technology, mounted on 3 circuit track and finished in stylish black – with matching attachments, connectors and power supplies – the luminaires harmonised well with the interior design of each area. In order to achieve a crisp, yet subtle effect, this project used a mixture of luminaire configurations, colour temperatures and beam angles with both 2000 lumen, C840 4000K (25° beam angle) and 1100 lumen, C830 3000K (10° beam angle) being introduced.
In the ‘Black Box,’ track runs were installed directly to the flat black ceiling between the 300mm black dropped beams on the ground floor, making the track system virtually invisible when the lights are on. On the first floor the Hi Track blends seamlessly with the black finish of the room. This, combined with a mixture of beam angles and colour temperatures, allows the client to create exciting and visually stimulating displays that will inevitably be required as the museum evolves.
In ‘The American Collection’ the Hi Track system, that suspends on 6mm black threaded rods from the new vaulted matt black 6m apex ceiling, has been arranged over the various rectangular, pre-determined, display areas within the hall. Everything above the track is matt black and again all track and heads are finished in black offering complete synergy with their surroundings.
For the set walkways, Dextra Lighting had to take a different approach. This came in the form of the Dextra Lighting Classic LED 2000 pendant – a luminaire designed and built specifically for this project. This 2000 lumen luminaire is powered by the Phillps TDLM Twistable 2000 lumen C840 LED technology and in turn controlled by “The Classic’s” unique matt aluminium spun reflector. Suspended above the set walkways, at intervals just below the height of the track system, these bespoke luminaires provide perfect illuminance for comfortable and safe public circulation.
This project has achieved an impressive 65% running cost saving when compared with traditional lighting systems and for added peace of mind was supplied with a full 5 year system warranty.
