The Electrical Safety Register is set to feature prominently in two of the biggest contractor promotion campaigns ever created in the electrical industry. The Register, which features the details of more than 33 000 electrical contracting firms and was borne out of Certsure, the new joint venture between the ESC (Electrical Safety Council) and ECA (Electrical Contractors’ Association), will be promoted to millions of specifiers as a result.
Steve Bratt, CEO of ECA said: “When we formed the joint venture an agreement was put in place to promote all those listed on the Electrical Safety Register like never before. “These two campaigns show the work being done to make the Electrical Safety Register the number one choice for specifiers of electrical work.
The first campaign, launched by the ESC, featured heavily on national TV, radio and magazines. It will target private landlords and outline the financial risks they face if they fail to act on their electrical safety obligations. The ESC has teamed up with the Association of British Insurers and homeless organisation Shelter for the campaign.
The research reveals that:
1.7 million private tenants are currently awaiting electrical repairs to properties
Landlord fines have increased to £20,000 but 300,000 don’t know any fines exist at all
Many landlords did not know their insurance may be invalidated should they fail to follow their obligations
Almost half of all landlords and tenants admitted they had no idea who was responsible for electrical safety and as a result crucial aspects are ignored.
By law, landlords must ensure electrical installations and wiring are maintained in a safe condition throughout the tenancy. The ESC recommends landlords should have electrical appliances and installations checked at least every five years by a registered electrician.
Meanwhile, a separate marketing campaign from Certsure will see local authorities, housing associations, architects and other specifiers of work, targeted with information about the Electrical Safety Register. Featuring the tagline ‘One Place’ the literature will outline the benefits of the register alongside coordinated technical information for particular markets such as landlords, building engineers and health and safety officers.
The campaign will reach in excess of 500,000 people over a 12 month period and each target market will be able to download additional material from the ESR website. Emma Clancy, CEO of Certsure added: “We said there would be benefits to all our contractors when we formed the partnership and hopefully they can see the plans we are putting in place to promote their business and help them win more work.”
