BS – British Standard
British Standard BS 7671 is the requirements for electrical installations and the standards that should be reached . Any one a part of NICEIC must meet these standards .
Certificate
When an electrician installs , alters , adapts or extends and existing circuit , they should issue the owner of the property with an electrical certificate .
PIR
Periodic inspection report is an electrical survey which finds potential hazards in an installation . The report will show the condition of all the electrics in the property and state whether it is satisfactory or requires electrical work to be done .
Consumer unit
A consumer unit is also know as a fuse box or an electricity control unit . A consumer unit consists of fuses and breakers in a single row which controls the distribution of
electrical energy .
Distribution board
A distribution board has multiple rows of fuses or breakers and usually serves more than one location in a property . A distribution board can be split phase , two phase or three phases .
Circuit
Includes sockets , lighting points and switches that are all supplied from the same origin .
Circuit breaker / RCD
A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by over load or a short circuit . Its basic function is to detect a fault and interrupt continuity to discontinue electrical flow .
RCD
Residual current device is a safety device that switches off the electricity automatically when an earth fault id detected .
Class 1 equipment
Class 1 equipment protection against electric shock does not rely on basic insulation only, but includes means for the connection of exposed-conductive-parts to a protective
conductor in the fixed wiring of the installation. Class I equipment has exposed metallic parts .
Electrical safety regulations
The law requires that all business owners, their directors, managers, employees and landlords comply with "The Electricity at Work Regulations". No system or part of it
may give rise to danger during either normal operation or under fault conditions
Extension leads
An extension cable / extension cord / extension lead / power extender is an electrical power cable with a plug on one end and sockets on the other . the use of extension
leads should be limited as it can lead to overloading the circuit .
