The Green Deal is a big deal. The government want to make every home low-carbon by 2016 and significantly reduce Britain’s carbon footprint. Now the Green Deal is arriving in Manchester.
Salix Homes have announced that they will be trialling the government’s Green Deal plans in Manchester by retrofitting 2,500 homes in the city.
This pilot scheme will initially involve retrofitting the 2,500 homes with energy-saving measures such as cavity wall insulation and improved heating systems. The trailblazing scheme will then expand to 9,000 homes, with the overall goal to “greenify” all of Manchester’s 260,000 social homes.
This pilot project is expected to create around 1,800 jobs in the city for electrical, plumbing and gas contractors and aims to show investors and other construction companies the benefit of green deal investment, which they can then roll out in other areas around the UK.
The Green Deal is expected to begin next year and will involve working on millions of UK homes to make them more energy-efficient.
