The service is based on BS 7671:2008 [Requirements for electrical installations. IEE Wiring Regulations. Seventeenth edition], which has been described by the Institute of Engineering & Technology as “a set of golden rules for electrical installation work and encourages best practice amongst the profession”.
Identifying the precise cable specification takes a matter of seconds using the new Draka online calculator. It starts with selecting the desired cable from a drop-down box, the desired phase of the supply, whether it is single or multi-core and if the cable is to be buried. The calculator then moves on to installation method and cable grouping, before requiring boxes to be filled in with the remaining cable requirement data. The precise cable specification is then displayed on the screen.
Commenting on the new service, Mark Froggatt, Draka’s Marketing Services Manager, says: “We believe that our new online cable sizing calculator goes a long way in supporting the aim of BS 7671, which is to ensure that electrical installations conform to the latest safety guidelines. It will no doubt prove as popular and useful to designers and installers as Draka’s A

This latest Draka initiative comes hard on the heels of the decision by Amtech – the market leading provider of electrical design and test-and-inspection software solutions – to incorporate the full range of Draka fire performance cabling into its ProDesign software. This software package enables engineers and contractors to conduct a wide variety of checks to ensure compliance with BS 7671 and can be used to carry out fast, accurate calculations and produce schematic drawings.
