The construction industry is set for a much-needed boost after a number of firms have announced they will be hiring more graduates in 2011.
CN Plus report that 19 private sector companies, which include construction giants Balfour Beatty, Mitie and Amec, as well as the likes of Shell, McDonalds and Asda, met with Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street today to discuss how they can grow and help Britain’s ailing economy.
The three construction firms have all promised that they will increase the amount of graduates that they take on and try and kickstart the struggling construction industry. Balfour Beatty have said they will hire an additional 200 graduates in 2011 and continue to expand their workforce.
Amec already recruited 1400 new staff last year and hope to increase that number in 2011. Amec’s CEO Samir Brikho confirmed this, saying that they, “currently have around 1000 vacancies worldwide, nearly half of which are in the UK. With the current workload and anticipated future contract awards we would expect our recruitment activity to continue in 2011.”
Mitie Group’s Chief Executive Ruby McGregor-Smith stated that her company also plans to expand their empire and intend to spend in excess of £4 million in 2011 on recruiting and training apprentices.
