There is very little more satisfying than the smell of bacon frying as you walk past your local burger van of a lunch time. Is your mouth already watering in anticipation? Ours too!
According to a Direct Line survey carried out just last month, the humble bacon butty is much more than a couple of slices of bacon between bread, and just as there are different strokes for different folks, how you like your bacon butty depends largely on where you reside in the country!
Smoked bacon and brown sauce?
The winning bacon butty combo was smoked bacon on sliced white bread with brown sauce. Here at My Local Electrician, we are well aware that electricians are very partial to a bacon sandwich now and then. But is the smoked bacon and brown sauce option good enough for electricians?! Maybe you guys like to have your cake AND eat it with Jamie Oliver’s gourmet sauce consisting of both red and brown sauce with Tabasco sauce added!
The survey of the trades and other small business owners revealed that 58% preferred their bread plain (not toasted) Only 21% of people surveyed liked their bread warmed or toasted. This is in contrast with Oliver’s ultimate bacon sandwich recipe that suggests warming your bread in the oven before serving.
The bread matters – a lot!
Disappointed with the floppy offering of 50/50 sliced bread coming from a plastic bag? Well some people might rate it for healthiness but when it comes to taste and obtaining the ultimate bacon butty, 50/50 sliced bread is way down the list of bread preferences.
Even though the Government is keen for us to ditch the white bread in favour of wholegrain or even to compromise and have 50/50 bread instead, it seems that trades people and business owners are not willing to give up their favourite bread for a bacon sandwich! A whole quarter of you guys (25%) prefer your bacon between slices of white sliced bread, whilst not too far behind, a nice soft bap is the best option. The Government recommended brown bread was favoured by only 6% - a long way to go Mr Cameron on persuading the bacon butty lovers to eat their wholegrains! ;)
Looking for a twist to your bacon butty? Other bacon butty lovers rate stotties, sourdough, tiger bread and even Belgian waffles as accompaniments to their bacon, but we suspect this largely depends on your local area – stotties being a favourite in the North West of England!
How do you like your bacon butty?
It seems the UK is divided lengthways with an East/West divide when it comes to true bacon butty preferences. Those in the East of England and Wales prefer their bacon butty served with tomato sauce, whilst those in the West of England go for brown sauce namely HP or Daddies.
Jazz Gakhal, Head of Direct Line for Business commented: “The nation has spoken and declared their preferred bacon butty recipe. The humble butty inspires passion and debate, and there are those that will always claim bacon needs ketchup, but brown sauce is the collective favourite. Bacon butties have been the staple British breakfast for years, helping fuel the nation as they head to work or wind down on the weekend.”
At My Local Electrician we like our smoked bacon butties served with red sauce (has to be Heinz, though others just call it ketchup!) with fresh white sliced bread – no butter. According to the ketchup or brown sauce divide we fit into no particular category! Happy Days!!
