THE government’s Green Deal promises to be a huge deal for the electrical industry, with millions of homes needing renovated to be more energy efficient and meet the government’s strict emission targets. But cowboy electricians looking to cash in on the work will need official accreditation to do so.
The coalition government’s Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has said that rogue traders and cowboy contractors will not be able to cash in on the Green Deal, as all contractors will have to receive accreditation from the government, which include a quality mark and insurance-backed warranties.
Mr Huhne says that, “trust is important when it comes to having work done in our homes. Consumer protection will be built into the Green Deal from the word go. There will be no place for cowboys to get a foothold in the Green Deal.”
The Green Deal is part of the government’s drive to reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2015 and install energy-saving devices like solar panels and cavity wall insulation in millions of UK homes. This involves offering homeowners “incentives” to go green and save energy, ranging from “free” holidays, to £6000 loans.
The Green Deal will create thousands of new jobs for plumbers, electricians, gas engineers and the entire construction industry and is set to see the amount of jobs rise from 27,000 to 100,000 by 2015, with a peak of 250,000 new jobs by 2020.
